In March, Nike President and CEO Mark Parker unveiled several new innovations, including the self-lacing HyperAdapt 1.0 sneaker. Nike had been vague about a release date, only saying that it would drop during the holiday season.
Things are getting clearer: The brand recently announced that the first generation of the shoe will be available in the U.S. at select Nike locations, and appointments to experience and purchase the product will begin Nov. 28.
Today we’re also getting a closer look at the design process in a new feature in Wired magazine, which was granted in-depth access to Nike’s design labs, including its infamous Innovation Kitchen. The magazine spoke with Nike designers Tinker Hatfield and Tiffany Beer, who led the design process.
More details on the shoe have been revealed, including how the motorized lacing system works. Nylon bands along the tongue of the shoe and on the sides tighten and expand with the push of a button. A blue light illuminates briefly when the motor is working. The battery can last for about two weeks, at which point it needs to be charged for three hours. The company says that it is already working on versions that can adapt to the foot automatically, eliminating the need for the buttons on the current version.
