Michelle Obama took part in celebrations today marking 100 days until the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She was joined by many athletes from Team USA in New York’s Times Square for a range of activities.
Obama told the crowd she has been a lifelong fan of the Olympics.
“This is kind of a dream come true for me, because I’m here today not just as the first lady, but as a real, lifelong, die-hard Olympics fan,” she said. “To this day, I still remember the excitement that I felt as a little girl growing up on the south side of Chicago when Olympic season would roll around.”
Obama also announced an initiative with the U.S. Olympic Committee to help introduce youth around the U.S. to new sports. She tried her hand at fencing, opting to wear a pair of black Nike LunarGlide 7 sneakers. The sneakers retail for $125 and are designed for running.
Today, Team USA unveiled its closing ceremony uniforms for Rio made by Ralph Lauren and featuring a pair of red, white and blue boat shoes for both the male and female athletes. Team Great Britain also shared the Stella McCartney for Adidas designs that many athletes will be wearing during competition.
