Jordan Brand is the latest athletic label to unveil its shoes dedicated to the Chinese New Year. For the Year of the Monkey, the brand has reimagined two of its silhouettes, a classic and a modern favorite: the Air Jordan V Retro Low and Jordan Super.Fly 4 PO.
The collection arrives on Saturday. The Air Jordan V Retro Low and Jordan Super.Fly 4 PO will retail for $200 and $180, respectively.
The shoes, according to the brand, draw inspiration from kites – recognized as a Chinese invention – and represents the promise of good luck and well wishes. Long recognized as a Chinese invention, the kite has deep cultural meaning representing promises of good luck and well wishes. The origins of the kite, according to the brand, come from the dream to fly, and were later developed into technical instruments used to measure distances and test wind speed.
The brand’s Chinese New Year graphic – with the iconic Jumpman branding displayed prominently on the tongue – weaves throughout each silhouette and features a pattern that boasts a hidden basketball court and imagery reminiscent of fighter jets and traditional Chinese kites. On the Air Jordan V Retro Low, the pattern is featured on the heel and the tongue, a bold contrast to the shoe’s predominantly black upper. on the Jordan Super.Fly 4 PO, the pattern is featured throughout the upper underneath a black mesh overlay, and also consumes the shoe’s tongue.
