Converse Launches Limited-Edition Psychedelic All Star Chucks
Converse has added a new yet retro look to its line with the launch of the Chuck Taylor All Star ’70 Suminagashi, which will be released Friday. The high-tops retain the iconic 1970s All Star silhouette while also memorializing patterns seen in late 1960s and 1970s psychedelic clothing and performance art.
The patterns are an appropriation of the 12th-century Japanese marbling technique called Suminagashi (translated from Japanese as “ink-floating”), which involves suspending inks or pants in a liquid water surface to create an image of landscapes, clouds, vast seas and mountain ranges.
The limited-edition sneakers come in a red pair and black pair, both featuring swirling marble-patterned uppers overlaid with rubberized polka dots. The silhouette is finished by aged-gloss midsoles and toe caps. White polka dots sprinkle the outsoles, and the classic heel-patch is replaced with a glossy, all-black vintage heel patch.

The shoes are a part of Converse First String, a limited-edition collection that celebrates craftsmanship, authenticity and collaboration at the highest level. In March, the Converse One Star ’74 Fragment Design sneakers — also part of the First String collection — sold out the same day of their launch.
The unisex Converse All Star Chuck ’70 Suminagashi will retail for $90 and can be purchased at Converse stores, Converse.com and select First String retailers worldwide beginning on Friday.
