On Tuesday, Adidas announced that its groundbreaking Speedfactory is ready for production to begin. The brand publicized last year its intention to build the factory, which will have the capability to turn customized shoe production into an automated process.

In October 2015, it signed a deal with German engineering firm Manz, which will provide the necessary technology for the factory located in Ansbach, Germany, near the athletic giant’s headquarters in Herzogenaurach. The Speedfactory will begin full-scale production in 2017.

“It’s a constantly changing world out there, and our consumers always want the latest and newest product — and they want it now,” said Adidas CEO Herbert Hainer. “That’s what Adidas Speedfactory delivers, starting right here in Germany, with best-in-class German technology.”

Adidas has already revealed its capability to create a 3-D printed midsole using its new Futurecraft technology and will reveal styles to be created at the factory later this year.

“[The Speedfactory] enables us to combine speed in manufacturing with the flexibility to rethink conventional processes,” said Glenn Bennett, executive board member of the Adidas Group. “Our goal is to give consumers what they want when they want it.”

According to the brand, it could bring a similar factory to the U.S.
