Whereas the runways of New York, London and Milan were dominated by the flat, Paris made a strong case for the resurgence of the heel, say Europe’s top buyers.

The flat isn’t going down without a fight, though. After all, a spot of healthy competition makes for a buoyant market.

Buyers from top luxury retailers sound off below on Paris Fashion Week.

• Lisa Aiken, retail fashion director, Net-a-Porter

Top Trend: “We’re back to stilettos and classic shapes; there’s a sense of it being slick, sharp and feminine. YSL, Lanvin and Off-White were all key brands for this trend. However, we’re also standing behind the elevated slide; Lanvin’s over-embellished style was incredible.”

Favorite Shows: “Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Haider Ackermann, Isabel Marant and Lanvin.”

Overall Outlook: “We’re seeing a return to the sexy shoe. White and silver colour palettes were the heroes of the season and stole the show in Paris – not least Isabel Marant’s silver ruffle heels.”

• Cassie Smart, buying manager of footwear and bags, Matchesfashion.com

Top Trend: “Heels. Stiletto heels were strong at Balenciaga with their printed spandex florals, feminine mid heights at Chloe, ruffles at Isabel Marant and that YSL logo heel at Saint Laurent.”

Favorite Shows: “Loewe, Balenciaga and Miu Miu — especially those scallop sole slides.”

Overall Outlook: “Although heels are strong, slides and flats still remain key with the embellished versions at Lanvin, crystal appliqué at Acne and pretty velvet sandals at Valentino.”

• Ida Petersson, non-apparel buying manager, Browns Fashion

Top Trend: “The return of the pointed toe at Saint Laurent, Stella and Celine.”

Favorite Shows: “Saint Laurent … I also loved the pointed mule and the kitten heel at Celine and those low-cut pumps at Stella — especially the checkered one.”

Overall Outlook: “I’m excited about the return of the mule and stiletto silhouette but also pleased that the slide and the flatform sandal are now officially big news.”
