Sporty, youthful and preppy. The words are often attributed to Tommy Hilfiger, and this season the brand’s men’s collection kept that mission statement in mind. The fall ’16 collection, shown during New York Fashion Week: Men’s, featured varsity striping motifs paired against more tailored pieces and shoes.
The footwear highlight here was a modern take on the essential hiker boot, which is once again proving to be a major trend this season. Hilfiger updated the style with an aged brown leather and thick wooden midsole, which has a subtle red stripe — a tie in to the ready-to-wear — running through it.
Other shoes in the collection included leather low-top sneakers, some printed with stripes or with contrast stitching. Dressier shoes included black leather lace-ups and chiseled toe Chelsea boots — essential classics, but not exactly screaming newness.
The clothing had more dramatic impact overall. Shearling-lined moto jackets or rainbow-color ribbed sweaters added a touch of lighthearted fun to the more utilitarian, commercially-minded footwear.
