Shoe of the Day: Marc Jacobs Revives The Mega Platform

The editors' favorite picks from all the spring 2017 shows.

Day Eight

Continuing the momentum behind his buzzy Mary Janes from fall ’16, Marc Jacobs reinvented — and amplified — the platform once again this season. The designer showed a collection filled with 90s raver-inspired gear (rhinestones and metallics and rainbow hues, oh my). The platform boots were equally as vivacious, coming in at a staggering 8 inches and finished in unique materials like color-blocked patents or embroidered snakeskins. But the best part? They were a bit jaw-dropping crazy, weren’t they — something only real trailblazing design can be. — Christian Allaire

Day Seven

Delpozo’s creative director Joseph Font is known for his dreamy confectionary collections that spotlight demi-couture details. Spring was no exception, with the introduction of a truly novel shoe silhouette. Curvy kitten heel mules had crisscross strapping and a petite island platform affixed to the pointed toe, which was covered in iridescent palliates. Though dainty, the effect was oddly innovative. It goes to show that big ideas aren’t always reserved for larger-than-life packages. — Charlie Carballo

Day Six

Thick slab soles added considerable clop to Proenza Schouler’s spring ’17 collection. The open-toed style featured a double platform that was part stacked wood, part rubber, and it elevated models and extra four inches. The substantial styles contoured the slender apparel shapes and balanced the line’s other big accessory statement: oversize earrings. — Mosha Lundström Halbert

Day Five

This season, Joseph Altuzarra took obscure inspiration from the 1990 film “Young at Heart” starring Laura Dern and Nicolas Cage. The designer cited their “fun-loving spirit and carefree attitude” in show notes. Pointed suede pumps had sophisticated quirk, picking up the ready-to-wear’s sparkly fruit accents and adding them to the toe for a quirky finishing touch. The tall and spindly proportions of these 100mm stilettos elevated the collection from girlish to womanly with a side of whimsy. — Mosha Lundström Halbert

Day Four

Following the Sept. 10 show, attendees were ushered to Wang’s usual rollicking after-party on site, only this one featured a complete Adidas activation for the launch, which is signified by the brand’s signature trefoil turned upside down. A Plexiglas trailer put the spotlight on the shoes: suede and perforated flatforms and a late-’90s-style runner with built-in knit sock details and boost soles. — Mosha Lundström Halbert

Day Three

For the past few years now, womenswear designer Tanya Taylor (a favorite of Lena Dunham) and Paul Andrew (who also counts the “Girls” star as a fan) have collaborated on seasonal shoes that nicely meld their respective whimsical and elegant aesthetics. Spring ’17 marked their final shoe duet, with Andrew recently signing on as design director of footwear at Salvatore Ferragamo. Hence, between this new role and his growing namesake label, something had to give.

At least they ended on a happy note, with a series of channeled suede and raffia-tasseled slides. They featured a chic chiseled wooden one inch block heel the shape of a teardrop — perfect to give models just a little lift from their personal sandboxes in crayon hues. — Mosha Lundström Halbert

Day Two

For spring ’17, Creatures of the Wind collaborated with Newbark on the runway shoes, taking the classic Beatle boot in a more beatnik direction with a graphic black and white interpretation. The monochromatic patchwork leather and low-block heel had a throwback swagger that was impossible to ignore. — Mosha Lundström Halbert

Day One

Starting out New York Fashion Week with a bang, Kanye West debuted his latest Yeezy Season Four collection on Sept. 7 (shown on Roosevelt Island). The collection included new Yeezy Boost 350s, leather pool slides and over-the-knee suede boots. The real showstopper, though, was the tall PVC plastic boots — a style Kim Kardashian West was spotted wearing the day before the show. — Christian Allaire
