“I have an eclectic taste and am drawn to things from the past,” said Peter Copping, the English designer charged with continuing the glamorous legacy of Oscar de la Renta.
Along with footwear and accessory designer Daniel Lawler, Copping is passionate about translating the house’s exquisite femininity from top to toe. “Personality and strong signatures are very important when it comes to shoes,” he said. “[They are] scrutinized at close proximity. The details have to be well-studied and refined.”
Since moving to New York from Paris last year, where he was creative director at Nina Ricci, the flagrant Francophile has found himself smitten with two ultra-American gems: New Balance sneakers for running around the atelier (he said he would entertain a collaboration if the opportunity arose) and the Windy City.
“I’m always very impressed when I go to Chicago and see the women there,” Copping said, noting that friend and star retailer Ikram Goldman encourages the city’s chic customers to take fashion risks. “They are passionate about it and like dressing up, which is refreshing to see.”
In the lead-up to the label’s fall ’16 runway show today, Copping piped up on his other preferences:
How I get my shopping fix:
“One thing I miss from Paris is Clignancourt flea market, and the auction house Hôtel Drouot. I also keep an eye on Christie’s and Sotheby’s catalogs. It’s exciting, but it’s better to leave a commission bid because you can get a little carried away in the room or on the telephone.”
Last book I got lost in:
“I pulled out ‘Tess of the D’Urbervilles’ over the holidays. It’s one of the few books where the film did it justice. It’s one of my favorite films by Roman Polanski.”
My best dish:
“I do an oven-baked sea bass in a salt crust pretty well. To be honest, it’s kind of hard to get it wrong. I also do Yotam Ottolenghi’s recipes often.”
Go-to cocktail:
“It’s from the book ‘Cocktails of the Ritz.’ I can’t remember what it’s called, but it’s vodka, grapefruit, champagne, grenadine and cassis. It really gets the gathering going!”
My happy place:
“For vacations, I tend to go back to France with my partner to our house in the countryside.”
Footwear of choice:
“I tend to go for Prada and Church’s shoes. I did buy a pair of Ermenegildo Zegna shoes from Stefano Pilati’s collection. He was always good at shoes at Saint Laurent.”
