Alexander Wang celebrated his brand’s 10 year anniversary in New York on Saturday evening. His women’s and men’s show, held during New York Fashion Week, certainly celebrated the grungy sportswear look that catapulted the designer into icon status.
While the ready-to-wear mixed mesh tops with laced-up pants, the footwear featured sporty elements as well. Wang presented his own take on the Teva-style sandal, heavily embellishing it with metal studs or chains. He took the idea one step further on certain looks, also adding a flatform sole.
Wang also appeared to be inspired by the very un-chic water shoe silhouette. The ultra flat, rounded-toe flat was done in woven leather with large, silver spheres embellished in a grid formation. The shoe was unexpected, but coherent with Wang’s sporty collection.
The menswear was less experimental. It featured leather low-top sneakers in two-tone colorways, all styled with red laces. The styles were also offered for women.
Though it would be, frankly speaking, fun to see Wang go an ultra girly collection — would Wang ever do a kitten heel or cutesy Mary Jane? — his unwavering focus on glam goth is respectable, and was a clean transition from his previous season’s accessories collection.
