“Did you notice the shoes?”is never a question at Saint Laurent shows. But this season, some clear stage direction ensured all eyes were drawn to the collection’s black pointed booties, strappy sandals and parent cuissardes – all updated with a slight conical heel.
Hedi Slimane must have instructed models to really vamp (and camp) it up with quite creative runway vogueing at the bottom of the catwalk. This kind of extreme posing may have fallen out of fashion by the early ’90s, but was well suited to the collection’s ’80s espirit and in-your-face attitude. Of course, we are all for making unabashed statements with shoes, which have been integral to Slimane’s redefinition of Saint Laurent’s codes each season. His preference for abbreviated hemlines and legwear (this time around, it was black sheers and fishnets) always makes for strong, eye-catching shoe moments.
