Get out your sunglasses — the ’70s are back. This time, the decade is surfacing in street-smart kicks that tap the era’s neon color palette. Young consumers in New York and throughout Europe have embraced the look, often blending the retro colors with cutting-edge technologies.
This time around, however, guys are sharing the color spotlight with women as bursts of orange, yellow, green and blue add energy to athletic brands Nike and Adidas and athleisure looks from Merrell.
And consumers are adding matching laces, a fun way to add personal style as well as change up a look day-to-day. And fancy lacing treatments create a one-of-a-kind look.
For the really adventurous, there’s plenty of color-mixing. Brights, rather than stark white, are being used as a canvas for these electric shades. And this color explosion extends to the sole with solid and multicolor effects.

With so much color under foot, there’s little need to compete above. Most consumers have opted to keep things simple with their apparel choices, including solid tops and bottoms in darker tones, allowing the kicks to do the talking.
