The “Future” could soon be here.
At the Agenda Emerge design conference today in Long Beach, Calif., legendary Nike designer Tinker Hatfield revealed that his team is working on a new version of the Nike Air Mag high-tops worn by Marty McFly in “Back to the Future II.” Sneaker blog NiceKicks.com reports that Hatfield’s team is endeavoring to include the Power Laces feature on the shoes, which would make them possibly the world’s first self-lacing sneakers.
While no firm release date was announced, Hatfield teased that the Air Mags should debut sometime this year. And it’s fitting timing, as the second installment of the “Back to the Future” series was set in 2015.

Hatfield himself designed the shoes featured in the 1989 film, and also created a limited-edition replica in 2011 that featured an electroluminescent outsole and a rechargeable battery — a first for Nike.
Those shoes were originally auctioned on eBay to raise funds for The Michael J. Fox Foundation. And several pairs can still be found on the auction site, though nostalgia lovers need to bring their checkbooks to grab them — the 2011 Air Mags are priced upwards of $6,000. One can only imagine how much shoes with Power Laces could fetch at market.
