A pair of Nike Air Ship sneakers worn by Michael Jordan during his rookie season and signed by the basketball star have just sold for $71,554.
The shoes, which were auctioned by SCP Auctions, had 27 bids. According to ESPN, this is the second-highest amount paid for a pair of game-worn Michael Jordan sneakers.
Although faded, Jordan’s signature can still be made out on the side of the sneakers, along with the date, 12-2-84. The white leather Nike Air Ship sneakers are finished with a red-trimmed upper, a red Nike swoosh and red sole. Jordan wore these sneakers while playing for the Chicago Bulls against the Los Angeles Lakers on Dec. 2, 1984.
The rarity of the sneakers is summed up by SCP Auctions: “What makes these so incredibly rare is the fact that Jordan only wore Nike Air Ships the first 6-8 weeks of the season, before transitioning full-time to Nike’s first edition of Air Jordans — the sneakers that would change the market forever.”
