The singer-songwriter got into collecting sneakers later in life, once she could afford to buy the latest releases. These days she covets the Adidas Ultra Boost, Nike Huaraches, and once sent a close friend to L.A. from San Francisco to pick her up a pair of kicks.
“Growing up, I didn’t really get shoes. All my friends, their parents were buying them Jordans and cool things like that, and we went to Payless. When I got older and started getting my own money and being able to financially support my style, that’s what attracted me to sneakers. At first, I wore mostly Vans because I used to skate everywhere, but living in L.A., everything’s not easy to skate to, so I put the skateboard down and got into things like Adidas and Jordan,” said Kehlani.
“I picked up the original Yeezys from Nike the other day, and it was cool because I had shoe history on my feet. Shoes have to be comfortable — that’s why I like the Adidas Ultra Boost because it’s pretty much like walking on clouds. And Nike Huaraches, too, because they’re really soft. I’ve never done anything too crazy for a pair, but on my tour date in Las Vegas, my good friend Jeff, who works at Rif SF, drove from San Francisco to L.A. to pick up my shoes from my closet, then drove to Vegas to drop them off so I could wear them on stage.”
