As a pro athlete, Deion Sanders was electric on the football field and the baseball diamond, and on Wednesday night, he was electric on stage at the FN Achievement Awards 2015.
The multi-sport athlete and Under Armour ambassador introduced Kevin Plank, the brand’s founder and CEO, who accepted the award for 2015 Brand of the Year.
The 48-year-old Sanders, nicknamed “Prime Time,” who is the only athlete to play in both a Super Bowl and a World Series, frequently referred to Plank as “my guy” throughout his speech, praising him for not only creating moisture-wicking gear for athletes but also for his efforts in creating a juggernaut brand over the past 19 years.
“My guy has almost 13,000 employees globally, my guy owns $4 billion in sales, that’s my guy,” said Sanders, who wore a suit and red Under Armour basketball sneakers. “I love him because he says what he feels and he feels what he says. He not only lives it, but he loves it. Kevin Plank is Under Armour and Under Armour is Kevin Plank. I don’t know about your guy, but my guy is real.”
Plank, who wore Ferragamos rather than Under Armour, was equally captivating during his speech as his guy, Sanders. Plank’s remarks had an obvious theme: the importance of effort.
“Effort at Under Armour is everything, effort in sports is everything, effort in business is everything, effort in life, effort in relationships; it’s one thing that matters, and hopefully you feel it every day from our brand,” he said.
In 2014, Plank received Person of the Year honors at the FN Achievement Awards.
