Ever since Miuccia Prada sent wooden clogs clomping down her spring ’15 runway, the stylish set has been forced to reconsider what has long been a footwear no-go zone. Exceptions included only duty workers, chefs (Mario Batali famously rocks his Crocs) and anyone who speaks with a Dutch or Swedish accent.
But quite like what happened with Birkenstocks, the clunky slip-on styles are experiencing a resurgence. Even Saint Laurent‘s Hedi Slimane has introduced a version, which has only heightened demand for traditional clog makers, such as Swedish Hasbeens and Dansko.
It must have something to do with all the ’70s influences currently dominating fashion, but also the rise in popularity of free-spirited music-festival style, with its suede fringed accents and paisley prints, lends itself to these easy sliders. And as temperatures currently hover in the mid-season range, where it’s not quite sandal weather yet but boots feel a little heavy, these mule-like styles just make good sense.

Kate Bosworth was an early adopter of the trend and thus far is the only starlet who has proudly trotted out clogs on the event circuit. Her look remains a lesson in how to wear this clunky, admittedly inelegant quasi-classic with plucky charm.
In December, she turned up at a Coach event in Los Angeles dressed head-to-stubby toe in the label’s leather shift and nailhead heeled clogs from the spring ’15 collection, in stores now.
Designer Stuart Vevers captured the exact vibe you should aim for when wearing clogs — with a nod to yesteryear (you don’t get much more retro than orange and brown, after all) but with the crisped-up lines of today.
