You’ve seen FN’s pairing of suits and boots, but can it be done with sneakers? The latest spring men’s styles suggest yes, as low-top sneakers get high-polish finishes in sleek silhouettes, colored leathers and minimal detailing.

While styling sneaks with formalwear is best reserved for more business-casual functions — think cocktail hours or summer rooftop parties — the look can still be decidedly smart, given appropriate shoe selections.

The key here is to look to the high-end sneaker market for inspiration (yes, we all cringe at luxe price points, but it will be an investment in the long run). By paying a little more, you’ll find finishing details such as jacquard panels or burnished leathers — details that are imperative to keeping the whole look sophisticated.

Ami’s mixed-media runner, in tones of gray and white, add visual interest while offering a clean accessory for a slimmer suit (think black or navy blue). If you’re wearing a printed suit, like a wool plaid, it’s best to keep the sneaker simpler, like Common Project’s white low-top or Berluti’s ultra-luxe sneaker.

Styles to avoid include any version of a high-top (too clunky), slip-on (too casual) or legitimate running shoe (save them for the gym). Athletic details, however, like a mesh panel or subtle neon strip, can be a fun addition when done right.
