Rupert Sanderson has a way with the details. “It’s about finding those fun new elements to play around with each season,” he said at his presentation for the spring ’16 collection.
Most recently, the special add-ons and finishing touches that caught his eye included d-rings (applied to d’orsay blocks and sandals) and silicon flower petals, which came from the most unlikely of places: retro floral swim caps. “Oh yes, I searched for these in Italy and finally found what I was looking for down the road in Soho,” said the London-based designer on the seemingly quirky accoutrement to stiletto and block heel sandals. In practice, they actually came out as pleasing as an Esther Williams synchro number.

Sanderson also carved out a new last shape that he was quite keen – a rounded almond toe pump with sturdier, shorter heel to help with his meat-and-potatoes pump business. Speaking of, his signature metal pebble that adorns pointed toes was done in acrylic and hallowed out this go around. It worked, sure, but didn’t appear as luxe as previous versions.
A highlight of the collection was tight but beautiful new series of cutout embroidered shoes using a technique Sanderson recently discovered. In gold, navy and black they had a different kind of desirability that defines a lot of what he does: originality.
