Nike Taps Into College Football Fever

They’re rowdy. They’re loyal. And they love buying specific items with their beloved team names brandished across them.

College sports fans are among the more feverish shoppers. So it is no surprise, then, that with college football season less than a month away athletic companies are unveiling new school-specific collections.

Nike, for one, is out to capture some of that excitement. The Beaverton, Ore.-based company today revealed its Week Zero collection.

The items, available on the company’s website and in select stores, pay tribute to “the fruits of months of training and preparation.”

The Week Zero collection of footwear, hats, training hoodies and T-shirts is in partnership with 13 of the nations top college football teams.

The Nike Free Trainer 5.0 sneaker plays prominently in the collection, and “meets the needs and demands of intense multisport workouts.”

The sneaker, which provides added stability and cushioning, was released earlier this year to help “the athlete who runs, jumps, cuts and lifts to reach their peak physical potential.” In particular, it features an outsole with hexagon-cut flex grooves that let wearers more easily pivot from side to side.

The participating college teams include the Penn State Nittany Lions, Oregon Ducks, Florida State Seminoles, Tennessee Volunteers, Texas Longhorns and USC Trojans, among others.
