When New Balance was at its peak resale value in 2020, they introduced a new creative partner in Japan’s WTAPS. The two have released a couple more projects since their debut, returning this season with a new grey edition of the Made in USA 998.
The first collab between the immensely popular Japanese apparel brand WTAPS and New Balance came in 2020, and featured a tan, olive, and orange style of the 992. Only 1,000 pairs of the shoe were made, and released exclusively through retailers that carry both brands. The project was highly sought-after, and still carried a hefty price tag on the resale market today.
They followed up a year later with the release of their cement grey 990v2, before taking a hiatus in 2022, and returning in 2023 with another all grey shoe, the 990v6. Now, the two are gearing up for their fourth entry, and guess what? It comes in all grey. This time around, the two are featuring the Made in USA 998 as their canvas, mixing the shoe’s many layers in light and dark shades of grey. Photos of the shoe are not very clear yet, but the outer side of the heels shows WTAPS’ Visual Uparmored branding.
