The New Balance “Refined Future” (or Protection Pack) series took the sneaker world by storm in 2020, racking up nominations for sneaker of the year. Now, the greyscale 2002R returns in 2024, this time as a Mule silhouette.
New balance’s “Refined Future” series began in 2020 with the release of the 2002R. The shoe’s were highly sought-after at the time, and spawned a wave of subsequent colorways of the 2002 model, adding the 1906 to the catalog in 2023. Also known to consumers as the “Protection Pack”, the line adds jagged, unfinished edges to the paneling of each shoe, giving them a handmade look and feel. This week, New Balance’s heel-less Mule version of the 2002R surfaced sporting this look, cast in one of the project’s original color schemes, the fan-favorite greyscale style. The look mixes shades of grey across its numerous layers, using darker tones for the underlays and a light cement grey to finish the outer portions.
