New Balance has released three different styles of their 1906 model over the last few years, each with a different purpose. Next year, another model is expected to join the lineup, the 1906M.
The 1906 from New Balance returned to the brand’s catalog in 2022, after its initial debut as a performance running shoe in 2009. Repurposed for lifestyle wear, the model has been immensely popular in the last few years, and has brought along several variations on its format in the R, D, and U sub-series. Now, a fourth member of the family has emerged, coming soon.
The 1906M surfaced in early photos this week, giving us a look at the next generation of New Balance’s 1906 silhouette. The ‘M’ in the title is believed to stand for Military, referencing a contract with the US Department of Defense from 2018 that saw the brand make special pairs of the 950v2 for the US military. This 1906 style features the same fused overlay element for the upper, shedding its usual paneling for a simplified new look.

New Balance’s next iteration of their 1906 model, subtitled M, has not been announced for release yet, and is currently believed to arrive sometime early in 2025. Featuring an updated lightweight upper with fused overlays, the model will likely debut first from NB followed by a wider release from retailers.
