The adidas Ghost Sprint Enters The Slim Sneaker Space

True to a forgotten sprinter model.

The adidas Ghost Sprint Enters The Slim Sneaker Space

Perhaps it’s recency bias, but all of a sudden, slim-soled sneakers feel like the most dominant movement in footwear, a vertical touched by almost every major footwear brand. To their credit, adidas has been a leader in the concept all along, be it as a herald of its arrival with the adidas Samba‘s dominance or in continuing its run via silhouettes like the Taekwondo. Redoubling their efforts, the Three Stripes is staking another standard-bearer, reaching into the archives to bring back the adidas Ghost Sprint.

Originally launched as a true track racer, the adidas Ghost Sprint debuted with a sleek leather build and a radical sole design. Underfoot, alternating hexagonal sections radiate out from the heel, taking on a racket-like shape that begins with a thin strip at the heel before becoming full-width at the toe. A defining feature when viewed from the side, additional brackets of traction creep onto the upper, ensuring that despite the thinned arrangement, you stay locked down at the back.

If you’d like to double check adidas’ work when they reference bringing back a 2000s style, check the images of that initial silhouette just above. In revising the design, German designers essentially keep the entire cushioning unit (or lack thereof) and upper in place, with the sole significant change coming in transforming 3D protrusions on the upper into flush counterparts on a “Silver Metallic” leather pair.

In suede, The grooves run deeper, embossed into the shaggy suede sections and allowing the teardrop-like geometry at the toe and jagged counterparts at the heel to really shine. And yes, to address the elephant in the room, there’s unquestionably a lot of resemblance between this tan/gum colorway and the work of Miu Miu in remodeling the New Balance 530. However, with far less real estate available underneath and both models embodying and recreating Y2K stylings, respectively, there was always bound to be some overlap. As for the colorway and double lacing similarities? Well… that’s a bit harder to justify.

The adidas Ghost Sprint has started appearing on overseas retailer sites for July 1st, carrying a €139 sticker price. It’s currently unclear if that will hold for stateside channels, but keep this page and our Sneaker Release Dates close by for more updates as they come.
