To this point, Vans experimental OTW label has lived up to its promise, consistently delivering big collaborative swings and in-house recontextualizations of their most storied silhouettes. For their latest effort, the sub-brand is reaching into the rolodex and dredging up a long-time partner, again nabbing Japanese denim outfit FDMTL for fresh takes on the Half Cab 33 and Old Skool 36.
While the two partners have explored denim extensively on past collaborations, this capsule goes through one further layer of abstraction. Both shoes eschew actual denim for a cotton/rPET knit build, already established within the OTW mainline via the Engineered Knit series. Nonetheless, the mismatch panelling and restitched details that define genuine Sashiko articles is well represented via the patchwork designs, with a clever branding inclusion on the Old Skool via the stitched Off The Wall insignia. Contrary to the jumbled motif, either shoe is essentially a one-piece up top, rather than the layered paneling seen on typical Half Cab and Old Skool releases.

The FDMTL x Vans OTW collection releases on May 30th via Vans online. The Half Cab retails at $140, while the Old Skool checks in at $135.
