Soon, the Nike Air Max Sunder won’t be the only representation of its late 90s family. The impending dawn of the Air Max Craze will make it two retro models of that ilk on the market, yet at least to start, they’ll be on differing paths; the Craze attempting to make first impressions, while the Air Max Sunder stretches out into more experimental looks. Take the shoe featured here for an example of the latter, Nike’s first use of denim on the Air Max Sunder “Gym Red.”
You can spot the durable fabric draping the upper’s foundation, taking over the distinctive shroud before interrupted by more typical hits of leather and synthetics on the mudguard. While the materials certainly make for an unexpected air on this shoe, it’s furthered by Nike’s past use of denim, usually leaning towards cooler or darker shades that make this “Gym Red” Air Max Sunder stand out all the more.
A further departure from the silhouette’s OG build can be spotted on the tongue once unzipped, changing from the Nike-office-nodding “6453” to “1996,” instead spotlighting into the Sunder’s original release year. Paired with the leather Air Max Sunder that hit the newswire not far before this pair, the new touches Nike is willing to roll out certainly add to our anticipation for how the silhouette will take on 2025.
Despite these official images appearing, no concrete release date has surfaced for the Nike Air Max Sunder “Gym Red.” Expect a $180 retail price upon release — watch our Sneaker Release Dates hub in the coming weeks for additional info as to when that might be.
