As Nike’s yearly Doernbecher collection comes due, attention is naturally shifting from designs to designers, spotlighting the patients at the Oregon community pillar chosen to craft their own Swoosh designs. 10-year-old Quin Nims’ choice for the 20th Doernbecher collection is the Air Max Sunder, now revealed via official images.
Doernbecher shoes understandably tend to be busy, jam packed with references to all the experiences, loved ones, interests and objects that helped each designer power through their arduous journey. It’s not to say that the sentimental throughline doesn’t extend Quin Nims’ Air Max Sunder, but she centers her pair around one guiding principle, “splashes of joy and power.”
The paint splatters throughout the upper and heel Air bubble are the best example, executing Quin’s three favorite colors and one that she wears plenty of in her personal life. To that point, Most of the shoe is overtaken by those neon shades, including the redesigned mudguard, sporting scaly “Safari” print and curved sawtooth shapes in an ode to Nims’ favorite on-screen dragon. Find a final flourish running down the shoe’s laces, with a sheer finish on the zip closure and “QUIN” proudly stamped on the tongue once unveiled.
Quin Nims’ Nike Air Max Sunder “Doernbecher” releases on January 25th, retailing for $185. Stay tuned for additional coverage of all six pairs included in this milestone DB20 collection.
