Matt Varga In any “most important collaborators” conversation, Grace Wales Bonner and the imprint that bears her name deserve heavy mention. On top of further shrinking the gap between high fashion and streetwear, the UK brand propelled the Samba to true “it shoe” status, iterating on the meteoric success of their first 2020 link-up with sustained collections since. After touching on pony hair for Spring/Summer, Wales Bonner x adidas Fall/Winter is jumping to a different side of the animal kingdom, focusing on crocodile skin materials.
Remaining the biggest draw, the Samba is first up, draping its entire upper in the reptilian leather. Previous Wales Bonner hallmarks like a woven tongue and exposed stitching at the heel once again grace the adidas staple. Both the orange & blue colorways close with a leather interior and classic gum sole.
The Samba Millenium, an archival football silhouette the Three Stripes recently brought back to the mainline and one the imprint tapped for that same S/S capsule, slides in for two corresponding looks. On either shoe, the tonal croc skin gives way to more traditional leather from the quarter to the toe. In orange, reflective silver is the choice, while the blue edition swaps to tumbled yellow leather in that same spot.
Last but not least, the adidas Superstar gets the Wales Bonner treatment for the first time. Letting its iconic construction stand on its own two, this capsule leaves the shape is largely unadulterated. The requisite dose of the spotlight material takes over the upper, while a satin sock liner lands in refined burgundy. Hits of co-branded detailing and the regular adidas tongue tag round out in gilded fashion.
