Updated August 15th, 2024: New Balance unveiled the Fall/Winter 2024 Made In USA collection in full, and the New Balance 992 isn’t included. It appears the archived runner will return as part of a later seasonal assortment, likely in 2025.

New Balance fanatics, rejoice. After two years in the archives, it looks like the New Balance 992 is coming back in the near future. Teddy Santis just teased a fresh yellow and black colorway on Instagram, providing an early glimpse at what we might be able expect from the brand’s Fall/Winter 2024 “Made In USA” collection.
Collaborations with Joe Freshgoods, jjjjound, KITH, and more fueled considerable hype surrounding the 2006 runner in the early 2020s, but in truth, the New Balance 992 has always has a place within sneakerhead consciousness. Originally released in celebration of the brand’s 100th anniversary, the 992 famously won the favor of Steve Jobs and helped strengthen the brand’s appeal to both “dads in Ohio and supermodels in London,” as New Balance ad campaigns often claim.
Therefore, many sneakerheads were caught off guard when New Balance stopped releasing it’s most sought-after (at the time) “Made In USA” shoe at the dawn of 2023, leading after-market prices to surge significantly — even for unassuming pairs like the quintessential Grey colorway. However, the decision reflects a tried-and-true New Balance release strategy that’s been executed for years; the Boston brand regularly shelves different MIUSA and MIUK models once in a while so as to diversify its product line, avoid over-saturation as we’ve seen in the New Balance 550, and make way for new models such as the 990v6.
In any case, it now appears that the New Balance 992 has finally awoken from its slumber. We’ve yet to hear firm details regarding the Fall/Winter 2024 “Made In USA” collection at the time of this writing, but given the teaser referenced here, we suspect the 992 will play a role in some capacity. Moreover, if you take a look at the background, you’ll spot new colorways of the aforementioned New Balance 990v6, orange and grey 992s, and what appears to be the 997.
