The Nike Air Max SNDR Returns To Original Form For 25th Anniversary

Albeit with a slight name change.

The Nike Air Max SNDR Returns To Original Form For 25th Anniversary

Nike’s Air Sunder Max from 1999 is set to return in original form come Fall 2024 – only it’s gotten its name changed to Air Max SNDR.

Confirmed via the brand’s SNKRS Showcase, which unveiled a whopping 40 upcoming pairs, the 25-year-old cross-trainer has never gotten a proper retro. The design regained a spot within the sneaker consciousness in July 2021 thanks to COMME des GARÇONS HOMME PLUS‘ Spring/Summer 2022 show. In typical fashion, however, Rei Kawakubo’s label reimagined the obscure performance model through a form-first, luxury lens.

The COMME des GARÇONS HOMME PLUS Air Sunder Max trio kept things simple with “Black” and “White” tones. Lycra® spandex (or its equivalent) returned across the upper, but mudguards stitched onto the zippered forwent their reflective TPR pods. Kawakubo and team’s offerings were celebrated by some (even with their $350 USD), but widely left enthusiasts of the Nike Alpha Project-creation yearning for a proper retro. Those pleas will finally be answered by the end of 2024.

Prepped as part of a larger celebration of Air, the Air Max SNDR is set to release in original and new color executions throughout next year. The cross-trainer from 1999 will debut in its classic “Deep Ocean/Gold/Deep Yellow” color scheme, a sight sure to be celebrated by evangelists of the forgotten Air Max sneaker. A member of the design team that worked on the Air Max SNDR’s bring-back effort emphasized during the SNKRS Showcase that close attention to detail was paid to ensure the pair resembled those first launched 24 years ago.

Stay tuned for firm nike.com launch details. No pricing information has been disclosed by the brand at the time of this writing, but the reimagined Air Max SNDR should retail for $180 USD.
