At one point, vachetta tan uppers were the hottest thing in sneakers. Popularized by the re-creations of the Air Jordan 4 and Air Force 1 by Japanese label Hender Scheme, the smooth tan leather has signified elegance in athletic shoes — a trend that nearly every sneaker brand followed in the mid-2010s.
Recently, Vachetta Tan has regained a spot in footwear trends. It’s playing a big role in an upcoming pair of Air Jordan 1 release for women, while the Dunk High has recently surfaced in full tan uppers. Now, the New Balance 991 retro runner arrives clad with attractive material, with smooth surfaces joined by perforated layers and even some swatches of suede and mesh. The best part about the material is the natural patina that occurs over wear, giving the sneaker a perfected aged look.
A US release date for this New Balance 991 has yet to be disclosed, but are available now at select retailers in Asia.
In the meantime, check out the very latest on the New Balance 550, which has been revealed in several new colorways for Winter 2022/2023.
