Jovani Hernandez Although adidas continues to explore new cushioning solutions to unlock new possibilities for athletes across the globe, the German sportswear company keeps betting on the Boost technology that changed the footwear industry in the mid-2010s. For its latest project, the brand’s combined football cleat heritage with modern performance running innovation for the Ultraboost DNA x Copa collection honoring seven MLS franchises.
The Three Stripes has been the official outfitter of Major League Soccer since 2004, with the last two years having been particularly important to the brand given the league’s growth in popularity. Applying the adidas Copa Mundial’s upper to a running shoe sole unit isn’t a new development (the David Beckham-approved Predator has undergone a similar process), but the latest proposition cements the legacies of the reigning MLS Cup champions, New York City F.C., as well as other formidable franchises like the Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders. Akin to the football boot, “COPA” text appears on the sneaker’s lateral mid-foot, branding the mostly-leather (not Primeknit) upper. Team colors animate the shoes in a predominantly tonal arrangement, while club names and founding years appear on the tongue.
