Jovani Hernandez While overshadowed by several other “Big Apple”-based brands, Angelo Baque’s AwakeNY imprint has been cultivating a sizable following over the last three years. A stint at Supreme made the Ecuadorian-American creative a known figure within the streetwear scene, but he’s allowed his work to speak for him as he’s embarked on his own retail venture. Along the way, Baque has tapped institutions like ASICS to create compelling product, which will soon include a GEL-Kayano Trainer 21 duo that’ll help AwakeNY further the mission of the late-Virgil Abloh‘s “POST-MODERN” scholarship.
The New York City-founded label has previously collaborated with the Japanese sportswear behemoth, covering other GEL-cushioned silhouettes in handfuls of statement-making patterns and tones. For the latest joint-project, both parties have kept things relatively tame, and seemingly on-theme given that the two upcoming sneakers feature a white, green and orange color palette appropriate for their Miami-exclusive launch. The sport-informed silhouette will only release at the LeBron James co-founded UNKNWN shop in the city’s Wynwood district. All proceeds from the collection’s first-day sales (December 2nd) will be donated to the initiative Abloh began before his tragic passing aimed at fostering opportunities in design for Black creatives, as well as Angiosarcoma Awareness, Inc., an organization focusing on the very illness of which the Off-White-frontman died.
