Nike announced today that it will no longer produce select performance gear such as clubs, golf bags, and golf balls. Nike, despite having a rich stable of athletes and legends such as Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, has never been the top dog in the golf business, coming behind golf-specific brands like Callaway and TaylorMade (owned by adidas). Nike’s golf business has been on steady decline since 2013, and this news raises a few questions regarding the athletes that have contracts with the Swoosh. They will likely take a pay-cut now that they are presumably free to pursue endorsement contracts with other brands.Nike brand president Trevor Edwards says that the brand is committed to being the undisputed leader in golf footwear and apparel, so you’ll at least get to wear your Flyknits and Dunks for the green.
